Rail Impacts of Long Term Disposal
King County's only landfill will soon be full and will need to close. The County is looking at new options for where to dispose of garbage from our region after that closure.
There are three possible options for future garbage disposal:
- Send garbage by train to other landfills in southern Washington or Oregon. This is the method that the City of Seattle, Snohomish and Thurston County currently use.
- Incinerate garbage using mass burn technology and send the ash by train to other landfills. This option would require the siting and construction of a waste-to-energy facility in King County; however, it does offer the lowest projected carbon impact for the environment.
- A mix of both options with about half of the garbage going to a waste-to-energy facility locally and half of the garbage, as well as the ash from the mass burn technology, being sent by train to other landfills.
Each option has benefits and challenges and we would like to better understand how those may impact you, your family, or business.
How would you feel about an increase in the number of trains in your community DURING THE DAY?
How would you feel about an increase in the number of trains in your community during the EVENING AND OVERNIGHT hours?
Which option is more important to you?
What is your zip code?
How many people live in your home? (Or work at your location if answering on behalf of a business)
